Deck Hatches
Deck Hatches
Whether you are replacing a leaking deck hatch on a sailboat or specifying new access hatches for a custom build, the right combination of hatch and hardware determines whether the assembly stays watertight, opens cleanly, and holds up to daily traffic. At Marine Depot Direct, you will find stainless steel deck hatches and accessories including standard low-profile deck hatches, deck hatch fittings and hardware, gas shocks, hatch screens, replacement gaskets, structural sealants, and replacement acrylic for 316 stainless steel frames, all in marine-grade construction.

Deck hatches fall into a few core profiles based on how they sit on the deck, how they open, and what role they play onboard.
Standard Low-Profile Deck Hatches
Standard deck hatches sit low on the deck surface with a hand-polished and electro-polished finish that resists corrosion in saltwater service. Frames and hatches are made from 316 stainless machine-rolled stock for structural rigidity and offshore durability. Stainless arms allow a full 180 degrees of opening, and pull-turn knobs hold the hatch in position while the deck is in use. Inside and outside opening configurations are available depending on cabin layout.
- Inside opening models for interior-only access
- Outside opening models with external handles for deck-side and interior access
- Hand-polished and electro-polished finishes for corrosion resistance
- Full 180-degree opening on stainless arms
- CE Approved construction
Deck Hatch Fittings and Hardware
Hardware components include replacement handle kits, adjuster arm kits, door seal kits, and replacement acrylic for the hatch itself. These are the parts that wear or fail first on a deck hatch in regular service, and most are stocked separately so a single failure does not require replacing the entire assembly.
- Replacement door handle kits and escape hatch handle kits
- Adjuster arm kits for opening and closing mechanisms
- Replacement acrylic panels in standard and low-profile sizes
- Door seal kits for restoring watertight closure
- Service doors and access panels for retrofit installations
Deck Hatch Accessories
Accessories cover the operational and seasonal items that maintain hatch function over the life of the unit. Gas shocks support the hatch in the open position. Screens block insects while keeping the hatch open for ventilation. Gaskets and structural sealants restore the seal against the deck.
- Gas shocks in 8mm and 10mm ball-end configurations at 26-inch length
- Hatch screens in round, square, and D-shape profiles
- Replacement hatch gaskets in various lengths
- Door gaskets for service doors and access panels
- Structural sealants for bedding and re-sealing flange installations
- Skyscreen roller surfaces for combined screen and shade applications
Material and Construction
Marine deck hatches in this category are built in 316 stainless steel with hand-polished and electro-polished finishes. The polish process serves two purposes: it produces a clean visual finish above deck, and it removes surface contaminants that would otherwise become corrosion sites in saltwater service.
- 316 stainless steel frames and hatches with molybdenum content for chloride resistance
- Machine-rolled stock to balance strength and low weight
- Hand-polished and electro-polished finishes that resist saltwater pitting
- Replacement acrylic available for 316 stainless steel frames in clear, smoked, and tinted formats
Sizing and Installation
Deck hatch fitment depends on three measurements: the cutout dimensions of the existing deck opening, the deck thickness at the hatch location, and the available clearance below deck for the hatch to swing open. Replacement installations need to match the existing cutout exactly or use a slightly larger flange to cover any oversized opening.
- Measure the actual cutout opening, the clear opening you can pass through, not the flange. Measuring the flange can result in ordering a hatch that is too small for the existing hole.
- Confirm deck thickness so the flange sits flush against the deck surface.
- Bed the flange with marine sealant and tighten fasteners individually as the bedding compresses.
Custom sizes are available on request for replacement projects where the existing cutout does not match a standard model.

Why Buy from Marine Depot Direct?
We stock standard low-profile deck hatches in inside and outside opening configurations, plus the replacement parts and accessories that go with them: gas shocks, gaskets, handles, adjuster arms, screens, and replacement acrylic. Our team can confirm cutout dimensions and below-deck clearance against your existing installation before you order, which prevents the most common return reason on a replacement hatch: a unit that fits the deck but binds against an interior bulkhead.
Frequently Asked Questions About Deck Hatches
What size deck hatch do I need for my boat?
Match the cutout to the dimensions of the existing opening, measured from the inside of the flange. If you are cutting a new opening, work back from the largest object you need to pass through it (typically a person for escape hatches, a fuel filter or battery for service access). Standard sizes cover most production boats; custom sizes are available for non-standard cutouts.
What is the difference between inside opening and outside opening hatches?
Both inside and outside opening hatches swing upward to the sky. Inside opening models can only be operated from inside the cabin, while outside opening models include external handles that allow the hatch to be opened from the deck as well. The choice depends on whether deck-side access is needed, cabin layout, and personal preference.
Why is my deck hatch leaking?
Deck hatch leaks usually trace to one of three sources: a worn or compressed gasket between the lid and frame, failed bedding compound between the flange and the deck, or a hairline crack in the acrylic, or water intrusion through the acrylic handle holes. Replacement gaskets are stocked in standard 6-foot lengths and most installations only need a gasket swap. If the bedding has failed, remove the hatch and re-bed with butyl tape or a marine structural sealant. Cracked acrylic should be replaced with the matching panel for that hatch model. When handle holes are the source of the leak, replacing the full handle assembly is the typical solution.
Can I install a stainless steel deck hatch on a cored deck?
Yes, but the cutout needs to be reinforced. Bore the cutout slightly oversize, remove the core material around the perimeter, fill the void with thickened epoxy, and let it cure before drilling the final cutout to size. Bed the flange with butyl tape or marine sealant and tighten the fasteners individually as the bedding compresses. This prevents water from entering the core through the hatch flange.
